If we use biotechnology in large scale and in all sectors, incl. food, agriculture, health and chemical industry, the biggest challenges of the world like feeding 10 bn people, mitigating climate change and protecting biodiversity might be solved. I know and believe in what I am doing. Therefore, I am fully committed and truly convincing, which leads to great achievements! My Biotech for Future vision is the reason, why I am also helping others to achieve their goals in biotechnology.

Wenn wir Biotechnologie in allen Anwendungsbereichen wie Ernährung., Landwirtschaft, Gesundheit und Chemische Industrie im großen Maßstab einsetzen, dann werden wir mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit die größten Herausforderungen der Menschheit lösen können: Wie ernähre ich 10 Mrd. I work on several important and highly inspiring projects right now: The disruptive green transformation of the chemical Industry is the most challenging one. Impacting the entire industry is also Traces of rDNA in fermentation products are of no regulatory relevance, New Genomic Techniques and its regulatory oversight, Definition of Sustainability in the EU Green Deal, Bringing novel fermentation products like HMO, vitamins or enzymes onto the market globally and several other more recent and upcoming activities that are related to innovation and sustainability.
Ich arbeite gerade an mehreren wichtigen und sehr inspirierenden Projekten: Die disruptive grüne Transformation der chemischen Industrie ist das herausforderndste Projekt. Auswirkungen auf die gesamte Branche haben auch: Spuren von rekombinanter DNA in Fermentationsprodukten sind von keiner regulatorischen Relevanz, New Genomic Techniques und ihre regulatorische Aufsicht, Definition von Nachhaltigkeit im EU Green Deal, Neue Fermentationsprodukte wie HMO, Vitamine oder Enzyme weltweit auf den Markt bringen und einige andere neuere und bevorstehende Aktivitäten, die sich auf Innovation und Nachhaltigkeit beziehen.

Fermentation products offer multiple opportunities for more sustainable food production. Many fermentation products are produced with genetically modified microorganisms. Proportionate regulations are key for incentivizing innovation in industrial biotechnology. There is no meaningful rationale for using recombinant DNA for regulatory classification of fermentation products. This would put the entire fermentation industry at risk, threatens safe and beneficial products on the market and challenges achieving the Green Deal objectives.

The European Green Deal and the trend toward circularity also brings significant opportunities for industrial biotechnology. Elke Duwenig from BASF SE sees huge potential in biotechnologically produced products and is vocal about precision fermentation as the route to go when it comes to sustainability. In her opinion, so called sustainable products must be underpinned by measurability doing life cycle assessment for their environmental, social, and economic impact, and, for a realistic change for the better, technology friendliness within our society is key.
